Just why is Acai called a top Superfood ...
Superfood is a label given to only a small number of foods, foods able to dramatically increase the health of anyone who eats them. It is not a label that gets used lightly, the food really does need to be deserving to ever be called a 'superfood' by experts.
One such food is the Acai berry. A native of the Amazonian rainforests of Brazil, the Acai berry is only really starting to come to the attention of those living in North America and Europe. Until now it had been one of Brazil's best kept secrets.
But recently scientists have realized just how many health benefits can be associated with the berry, just how health giving this berry really is. This has led people such as Dr Oz on the Oprah show to tell the world that the Acai berry really is one of natures superfoods.
Why the Acai berry is a superfood
The Acai berry is a berry that is laden with hype. Numerous manufacturers and advertisers want to tell us that it can solve the worlds health problems. Obviously this is not true. What is disappointing is that all this hype is leading people away from an important truth, the Acai berry really does have a lot of health benefits that it can pass on to people, it really does deserve the label 'superfood',
Why? Take a look at some of the proven facts about the Acai berry and its supplements.
-
1. The Acai berry has a massive amount of antioxidants
-
These antioxidants are important for boosting the bodies immune system. They help the body to fight off viruses and bacteria. They remove waste that is decomposing in the body and they help deal with 'free radicals', molecules known to cause cancer to which the body has no natural defence.
-
2. Acai berries are laden with fiber
-
They have a massive amount of fiber. This is important for a number of reasons.
-
It means that the berries are able to 'bind' together otherwise compacted waste, of which there is over 10lbs in the average adult, and then remove it. This is waste that is decomposing, releasing toxins and acting as a breeding ground for harmful bacteria.
-
Appetite suppressant. Fiber is well known for acting as an appetite suppressant. It provides a comfortable 'full feeling' that would take a lot more food to achieve without it.
-
Fiber, along with a significant amount of protein in the Acai berry, helps by giving a prolonged energy release, which allows for more energy and stamina from users.
-
3. Acai berries are packed with vitamins and nutrients
-
This means that they act as a wonderful source for many of the essential vitamins that the body needs. It helps to improve the quality of the bodies skin, give more energy and improve other factors such as eyesight and the immune system. -
As you can see, the proven facts of the Acai berry are actually very significant; it is easy to see why the Acai berry has been called a superfood by many leading experts. When you look past the hype and the advertising, you see that there is a very worthy food, easily able to improve your health.
-
One of the major problems faced when choosing a health supplement is the amount of claims that manufacturers make... it is sometimes hard to believe in all the hype and advertising that they do. They obviously do so with the agenda of trying to make you money and so trust becomes a real issue.
Which is why it is important to always look elsewhere. Why it is important to see what people with an unbiased view, people without an agenda have to say. People who know what they are talking about. In short, scientists and researchers.
Research into the Acai Berry
Research into the Acai berry only started a few years ago, and it was in 2004 the first English report was published by a team of scientists. So from a scientific perspective the research has only just got underway.
But because of the increasing popularity of the Acai berry, and the huge amount of claims made by those advertising it, many scientists have got involved in these investigations, allowing us to have a number of proven facts with which to base our decisions about the Acai berry.
Are the antioxidants within the Acai berry absorbed by humans?
The high number of antioxidants contained within the Acai berry are undisputed by even those who feel that the Acai berry is undeserving of the label 'superfood'. But there was a question over whether the antioxidants were able to be absorbed into the bodies blood stream.
That is the question that Dr. Susanne Talcott, lead researcher of a team of Texas AgriLife Research scientists, asked. She took 12 healthy people and had them take Acai Berry extract. She then examined their blood and urine 12 and 24 hours after they consumed the extract.
The results showed a far larger concentration of antioxidants than usual, showing that the antioxidants within the Acai berry are able to be absorbed into the human body. (research first published in Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry)
Acai Berries and Cancer
Another bold claim being made by the Acai berry is that it is able to help fight cancer. Such a claim is easily worth investigating by scientists and the University of Florida took up the challenge to prove these claims right or wrong.
So they tested Acai berry extract of various strengths on human cancerous cells (infected with Leukemia) and studied the results.
It is fair to say that the results shocked everyone. In 4 out of 6 cases the Acai berry extract triggered a 'self destruct' response in cancerous cells. The extent varied from extract to extract depending upon concentration, but the range was from 35% to 86% destruction of cancerous cells.
Dr Stephen Talcott, Assistant Professor in the trials, is very encouraged by the results and calls for further testing to understand the extent of the Acai berries health benefits: “We are just beginning to understand the complexity of the acai berry and its health-promoting effects.” He says (results published in Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry and http://news.ufl.edu/2006/01/12/berries/ )
The high level of vitamins and nutrients
Another claim that many people that are opposed to the Acai berry make is that the berries are not as healthy as is being made out. They suggest that the nutritional values of the berries are not that great.
Research by numerous scientists have shown that the Acai beries contain large numbers of Vitamins A, B and especially C. The large amount of Vitamin C shows why tribes have traditionally used the Acai berry to fight off scurvy.
Acai berries have also been proven to be laden with iron, potassium, phosphorous, calcium and 19 amino acids. For more information check out this Vanderbuilt University paper, published in Feburary 2009, http://healthpsych.psy.vanderbilt.edu/2009/AcaiWeightLoss.htm

The ability to control oxygen free radicals is expressed through an ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) number. The higher the ORAC number equals stronger antioxidant content, and the more effective Acai product.
The importance of foods with high ORAC values, is based on early findings revealing that eating foods with a high ORAC score may slow down the oxidation processes linked to aging.
It is believed that antioxidant-rich foods have the power to ease negative changes the body and brain go through due to natural aging.
Many middle-aged (and younger) are starting to increase the number of high-ORAC foods in their diet in hopes of combating the diseases and illnesses associated with getting older.
Other benefits connected to high ORAC values include:
... the opportunity to combat long-term memory loss
... slow down the deterioration of learning ability
... boost brain cell activity
... prevent oxygen damage in different parts of the body, such as the capillaries (tiny blood vessels).
So, in order to reap these benefits, a diet high in foods with a high ORAC number is recommended. The USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) suggests a daily intake of 3,000 to 5,000 ORAC units.
Unfortunately, the average person in the United States only consumes less than 1,000 ORAC units per day.
In fact, the recommended "5 a day" fruit and vegetable requirement established by the USDA generally only delivers an ORAC score of less than 1,750 units.
Common popular fruits, such as the apple and banana respectively provide an ORAC score of 218 and 221. The blueberry is considered one of the healthiest berries in the world and offers an ORAC score of 2,400.
However, when it comes to the Acai berry, the fruit holds an impressive ORAC score of 5,500.
This is why it is vital to only get properly processed Acai products such as freeze-dried, to guarantee you are getting the most health benefits possible.
